Why do research away from Ohio State?

As a major research institution and one of the largest universities in the nation, Ohio State has many excellent opportunities for its undergraduate researchers. Many students, however, expand their search for research opportunities to include programs in other cities, states, and even countries. These programs are often housed at prestigious academic and governmental institutions, and often have generous funding packages.

The US federal government allocates research funds through its constituent departments and institutions. A portion of these funds goes to support the research training of undergraduate students, and many of the best research opportunities are sponsored by federal funds. For a listing of research opportunities directly sponsored by federal institutions, please visit our Government Research page.

For a listing of research opportunities outside of the United States, see our International Research Opportunities page.

Other useful listings and searches

These websites also offer listings and search functions for undergraduate research opportunities, including opportunities not noted on our website.

The Amgen Scholars Program
Links to sites at 10 U.S. host universities with Amgen Scholars Programs providing intensive summer research opportunities in science and biotechnology.
Deadline varies depending on programs. See flyer for more details.

Cleveland Clinic Research Opportunities

GREAT Group Summer Undergraduate Research Programs
Links to multiple summer research opportunities in biomedical sciences.

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE)
This link is the gateway to many of the education and research experiences offered through ORISE and ORAU, the Oak Ridge Associated Universities.

Organization for Biological Field Stations (OBFS)
OBFS includes about 200 member stations from North America, as well as about 100 individuals who are associated with field stations. The website allows you to search courses at specific stations.

The Euroscholars Program
EuroScholars is a unique study abroad program for advanced students whereby students can conduct research at a high caliber institution while taking a language and culture class. An OIA approved study abroad program.

The National Science Foundation
The NSF maintains an extensive, searchable database of funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates. Students may search by state and/or subject area. Students who are U.S. citizens from any university are eligible to apply for these REU programs.

List of Research Opportunities and Deadlines

The funding sources below are divided into quarters by application due date, so that you can more easily find upcoming deadlines. These funds are generally recurring: current deadlines are listed in red, while past deadlines that are listed in black. Past deadlines will be updated as new information becomes available; they remain on the website so that students can be aware of sources that may become available again.
